Captain America: The “Worst” Avenger

Though I have no personal interest in comic books, I have found my excitement levels at the release of each Marvel film adaptation surprisingly high. Marvel have been, in my humble opinion, a raging success within the last decade churning out groundbreaking series such as Blade, X-Men, Spiderman and, my personal favourite, Iron Man. However, be prepared for an extremely average two-hour cinematic experience if you trouble yourself to sit through Captain America. I will give it its dues, it is released in the UK on the 29th of July but don’t say you haven’t been warned!

Now I have made a list of aggravating or simply rubbish aspects of the movie. The first of which is the poor attempt to CGI, the usually buff, Chris Evans into a spindly loner. Although in the process they managed to make him look ridiculously fake on occasion and, annoyingly, his neck was disproportionately small in comparison to his head, and the rest of his body. However, I will not be too harsh as I realise CGI is not the easiest thing to master. Yet I will not forgive the abominations that were the attempts at accents. Dominic Cooper has done well for himself getting into such high-class American blockbusters and also starring in the new drama, The Devil’s Double, but his wishy-washy ‘American’ accent is 100% unforgivable. Even when he’s not slipping into his native English accent, his effort at being a Yank sounds superficial at best!

These details, I must admit, are picky to the extreme and wouldn’t even be mentioned if the rest met expectations. However, the fight scenes, which took an hour and a half to actually get started, left much to the imagination. There were no surprises or breathtaking moments and the amount the Captain relied on the use of his ‘rare metal shield’ was especially underwhelming. There were few signs of any extraordinary strength or superhuman agility. Marvel’s lack of creativity is astonishing which is more than can be said for the plot itself! Simple goodie goes after (German) baddie. Simply boring. Also, the rushed and surreal climax left dread of the prospect of a very unnecessary sequel.

My final, and definitely most important, issue was Marvel’s unimaginative decision to follow the trend of a villain with no nose. Nothing more needs to be mentioned on this point.

Needless to say these opinions could be seen as cynically English and that many Americans will enjoy Captain America with patriotic delight.

Marvel is gradually sucking the juice right out of their masterpieces leaving this, I’m afraid to say, a meager raisin.
